AV-Comparatives has tested 8 different antivirus programs for Macs and it has found the best and the worst of these programs and the recent scores might be surprising.

The test included the following antivirus programs

  1. Avast! Free Antivirus For Mac’s
  2. Avira Free Antivirus For Mac’s
  3. Bitdefender Antivirus For Mac’s
  4. ESET Cyber Security Pro
  5. Intego Mac Premium Bundle
  6. Kaspersky Internet Security For Mac’s
  7. Krometech Mac Keeper
  8. Sophos Antivirus For Mac’s

Each of the following was subject to being tested for 64 pieces of malware for Mac’s and 500 pieces of malware for Windows PC’s. Mac’s should not be in threat by most Windows-based malware, but there are times when it could work across multiple operating systems. This also shows the scope of protection of the program as it should cover all threats not those targeted specifically for your operating system.

As we can see the top three players are Sophos, Avast, and Eset. However, these scores are not reflective of the programs ability to protect your Windows-based computer for these antivirus programs are not notoriously strong at protecting Windows-based malware. Bitdefender has been the long time winner of the av-test.org malware test for Windows computers where it scores 100% nearly 100% of the time. These scores are a good indicator for your Mac though as the malware that exists specifically for Macs interact with the system in a different way.

When malware wants to attack a PC it is generally written specifically for that operating system Windows has a similar kernel across all versions and thus malware can be easily cross compatible. However, if you look for Windows malware on a Mac you will see no real effect or very minimal. This may only be a threat if it attacks something such as a program for instance Chrome while different on the two machines malware is generally able to find the same exploit in both versions. The thing to remember is while your Mac should not be harmed by windows based malware it is a good idea to have an antivirus that protects well against both and in this case you have some options.

Recommended Program:

Avast Free Antivirus For Mac’s takes the win here for my recommendation. The program comes with a clean user interface and has the same scores as several other pay to use antivirus software. Not only that but it comes with almost total protection from threats that you won’t find in most free antivirus programs. If you are looking for a free to use antivirus software for your Mac, then Avast Free Antivirus for Mac’s is the way to go.

What are your thoughts are these scores a fair representation of each of these programs and if you wish to see the full test results you may read the full study here.

    • Because the testing procedures and the malware samples are different. Both of them are recognizable labs and have their own scores in av-test we find Bitdefender as the king of antivirus while in av-comparatives we might find another. All the antivirus testing labs are used as different standards when the end of the year comes closer I will do a cross comparison between many different labs and determine the true king of 2014 antivirus protection for desktop and mobile. This was to show the scores of av-comparatives and doesn’t necessarily mean that these programs are the best but as the end of the year approaches I will cross compare and probably perform my own tests to show the true king of 2014.
